I was initially licensed in March of 1988 as KA3STI and I worked over a hundred stations in CW in my first month on the air. I upgraded to General in April of 1988 and retained my call. In June of 1988, I upgraded to Advanced and changed my call to KD3IC. It was as KD3IC that I worked DXCC and WAS from the little town of Glen Rock, PA. I lived deep in the valley, but I put out a very strong signal with my Kenwood TS-820 and a long wire antenna tuned with an old MFJ tuner.

I stayed on the air until I retired from the National Security Agency in 1993. My wife and I moved around the Southeast US for a few years until we settled in the Atlanta area in the town of Woodstock, GA, where we lived in an antenna restricted environment. I did work some clandestine CW on my old Norcal 40 and used to sit around Allatoona lake in the afternoons and work QRP CW on an old HW-8. After a serious illness, I decided in 1998 that I would never have the chance to work Ham Radio again, so I sold everything I had except my old straight key on Ebay.

Changing circumstances has brought us to this wonderful little town of Mooresville, NC where we can be close to some of our grandchildren. Our home sits on an acre of land and one of the most appealing aspects of this location is the tall pine trees that form a natural antenna structure. With a nice wire antenna like the G5RV, some weights and some pulleys, you're on the air in no time!

It's great to be back on the air again. Thanks to all the hams here locally who have helped and befriended me. The ICARS (Iredell County Amatuer Radio Society) guys have been especially nice to me.

See you on the air!
